Major Fire Breaks Out on Ferry Near Greece

Hundreds of people have been rescued after a major fire broke out on a ferry between Greece and Italy on Friday. A single crew member was injured, the Greek coast guard said.

The 183-meter-long ship caught fire off the coast of the Greek island of Corfu en route from Greece to Italy. There were 239 passengers and 51 crew members on board.

Several ships were deployed to bring the passengers of the Euroferry Olympia to safety.

It is still unclear how the fire started. Presumably, it started in the hull of the ferry. Owner Grimaldi Lines reports that the crew has tried to extinguish the fire unsuccessfully.
