Several villages north of the Greek capital Athens have been evacuated due to forest fires in the area. Emergency services went to all the houses in the area to make sure no one was left behind.

A westerly wind fanned the flames even more on Friday morning, making it too dangerous in the region.

The fire brigade is trying to ensure that the fires do not get much more significant. However, the authorities say it is impossible to control the fire with the current wind to the ANA news agency.

Greece is ravaged by major forest fires. According to the fire service, at least 86 new fires have been added in the past 24 hours. Even tens of kilometres from the fire, it smells of smoke and rains ashes.

On Thursday, it was announced that the army is being deployed in the fight against the forest fires. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called it an unprecedented environmental crisis.
