The Ukrainian city of Chernihiv is almost completely cut off from the outside world by Russian troops, regional governor Vyacheslav Chaus reported Friday.

“The enemy operationally surrounds the city,” Tsjaus said in a TV speech. According to the governor, the city in the north of Ukraine is also being shelled by artillery and combat aircraft.

The mayor of Chernihiv previously spoke of a “catastrophic situation”. According to Vladislav Atraschenko, there is no electricity, water, and heating. The infrastructure would also have been completely destroyed, and artillery shelling would have killed civilians.

The hospital in the city of 300,000 inhabitants is also being shelled, causing medical care to collapse.
