Facebook Inc. becomes Meta, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday at Connect 2021, the annual conference. With the rebranding, Zuckerberg wants to focus on the metaverse, a recent concept that describes the next generation of the internet.

Individual platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp will keep their names.

Facebook Inc., the parent company of the social network, is going through a complete transformation with the rebranding. Apart from the name and logo, the future will change. Zuckerberg revealed plans for a metaverse, an online 3D world where people can play games, work and communicate in a virtual environment, often with VR headsets.

In July 2021, Zuckerberg said he expects that in the coming years, “people will no longer see us as primarily a social media company, but as a metaverse company.”

“I’m proud of what we’ve built so far, and I’m excited about what comes next – as we move beyond what’s already possible today, beyond the limitations of screens, beyond the limits of distance and physics, and towards a future where everyone can be together, create new opportunities and experience new things. It’s a future that goes beyond one company and will be created by all of us,” he said.

‘Our new brand name reflects where we are going as a company and what future we want to build. We chose Meta because it can mean go further. The name reflects our commitment to building social technologies that take us beyond what digital connection currently makes possible.”

The intention is to have the shares traded under the ‘stock ticker’ MVRS from 1 December.
