NASA Lets Two Companies Develop New Spacesuits

The American space agency NASA is developing new spacesuits for astronauts. NASA awarded the contract after a one-year tender procedure to the American companies Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace.

The development of new spacesuits has been planned for some time but has been plagued by delays and other problems.

The spacesuits that NASA astronauts currently wear on the International Space Station are quickly becoming obsolete. For example, there are known incidents of water accumulating in helmets during spacewalks. The new suits could be ready for the first tests as early as 2025.

The equipment is intended for use by NASA astronauts on the Artemis mission, which will return American astronauts to the moon for the first time since the early 1970s. Ultimately, NASA intends to conduct its first manned mission to Mars.
