Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wants the West to supply more weapons so that the Ukrainians themselves can establish a no-fly zone over the country.
“Please support us,” the mayor told the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera.
“We are able to close our own airspace, but we need the right weapons for that,” Klitschko said. He calls on NATO and European Union countries. Many of those countries, such as the Netherlands, already supply arms to Ukraine.
“Remember that we are defending our country, but at the same time, we are defending the fundamental values of European democracy,” said the mayor. Klitschko calls on countries to cut all economic ties with Russia and President Putin. “He uses every euro to strengthen his army.”
According to Klitschko, there are still 2 million civilians in the capital, where at least 200 civilians have been killed.
