Kidnapped Schoolgirls Released in Nigeria

Hundreds of schoolgirls kidnapped in northwestern Nigeria have been released.

Zamfara state authorities have announced that all 279 students kidnapped from a primary school in the village of Jangebe last Friday are free and in good health.

Authorities have negotiated with the gang that took the students hostage and also used ex-gang members to persuade the kidnappers to let the girls go.

The north and central part of Nigeria is plagued by heavily armed gangs who kidnap groups of people and demand ransom. Schools are often the target.
