In Kansas City, Missouri, a 16-year-old boy was shot by a homeowner last Thursday after he rang the wrong doorbell. The police announced this at a press conference on Sunday.

The teen’s parents had asked him to pick up his younger brothers. After calling the wrong address, the homeowner shot the black boy in front of the house. Despite the “severity of his injuries,” the victim’s condition is currently “stable,” police said.

Hundreds of people have taken to the streets in Kansas City to protest against gun violence and racism, writes the American channel CNN. Stacey Graves, chief of police, does not rule out a racist motivation but emphasizes that the investigation is ongoing.

The identity of the homeowner is not yet known. The suspect was taken into custody for 24 hours but has since been released as police collect further forensic evidence and a declaration from the victim, according to CNN. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe was started to cover the boy’s medical expenses. Almost 690,000 euros were collected there.
