US and China Discuss First Summit Since Biden Took Office

The United States and China are discussing a possible meeting of ministers in Alaska.

It would be the first summit meeting at that level since President Joe Biden took office, reports the South China Morning Post newspaper.

Such a meeting allows the great powers to work on their tense relationship. That deteriorated significantly under Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump. The countries became embroiled in a trade war, closed each other’s consulates, and argued over the coronavirus’s Chinese approach.

The senior officials should meet in the city of Anchorage, halfway between Washington and Beijing. An insider says that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi are expected. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi may also join.

A US government official confirmed to Reuters news agency that a summit meeting is being discussed. He didn’t want to go into detail but did say it should take place shortly.

Secretary Wang said last month that the US and China could work together on some issues to resolve their conflicts. He also called on the US to stop “smearing” the Chinese Communist Party and stop meddling in its internal affairs.
