China introduces new rules to curb the construction of super skyscrapers. To combat “vanity projects”, cities with a population of less than 3 million are no longer allowed to build skyscrapers higher than 150 meters.
In larger cities, a maximum height of 250 meters will be introduced, the Chinese authorities reported on Wednesday. Currently, in China, there is a height limit of 500 meters to construct new skyscrapers.
With the new rules, China hopes to tackle property developers who build expensive and impractical skyscrapers intending to stand out. China has some of the tallest buildings in the world. There is the 632 meters high Shanghai Tower and the 599 meters high Ping An Finance Center.
Earlier this year, a nearly 300-meter-tall skyscraper in the Chinese city of Shenzhen began to wobble. This led to panic among shoppers and to the complete evacuation of the building.
