Man Ploughs into Pedestrians in Norway: One Dead, Two Injured

67

In the Norwegian town of Steinkjer, north of Trondheim, a man drove his car into several pedestrians. A man in his twenties died of his injuries in the hospital, and two others suffered minor injuries. The Norwegian police report this.

On Sunday night, the suspect – a man between the ages of thirty and forty – drove his vehicle onto the sidewalk. The man was said to have been under the influence of alcohol. However, it is not yet clear whether it was an accident or whether he deliberately drove into the pedestrians.

Initially, police assumed foul play, but the suspect’s lawyer, who was arrested shortly after the crime, said her client had insufficient awareness of what had happened and should be investigated before the scheduled interrogation. In addition, the man was already known to the police.

Police confirmed on Sunday morning that the man was very drunk and could not be questioned. However, due to the unclear nature of the crime, special security measures were temporarily announced across the country.

Norwegian Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl described the incident as “tragic” and expressed condolences to those affected.
