In Germany, a record number of people have died from the effects of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, reports the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of the RIVM.
No fewer than 1244 people died of the coronavirus in the past 24 hours.
More than 25,000 new coronavirus infections have also been identified in the last 24 hours. Thursday morning’s figures again represent a significant increase compared to the day before.
On Wednesday, the RKI reported 19,600 new infections. On Tuesday there were almost 13,000. It is common for the number of new infections per day in Germany to increase as the week goes on.
In total, almost two million infections have already been diagnosed in Germany.
The total official death toll came to 43,881 on Thursday. At the end of last year, a hard lockdown was announced in Germany at about the same time as the Netherlands.
Chancellor Angela Merkel expects her country to be in lockdown until the beginning of April to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
