Prime Minister Boris Johnson has thanked the British Parliament for approving the trade agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union, less than 24 hours before Britain’s final farewell from the country union.
“The future of this great country is now firmly in our own hands,” Johnson said in a statement after the deal was approved by the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
He spoke of “historical legislation”, whereby the government mainly thinks of the British people’s importance.
The British had already formally left the EU at the end of January, but are bound by agreements with the country block until the end of this year.
The deal will prevent major trade problems between the United Kingdom and the EU, without, for example, import duties. According to Johnson, it is the beginning of a new relationship with the EU.
For Johnson, it is an important milestone since the Brexit referendum in 2016. Brexit perils forced two prime ministers, David Cameron and Theresa May, to leave the field.
Johnson has always been a strong advocate of Brexit, and it was essential to him that an agreement between London and Brussels was concluded.
