US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania unexpectedly cut off their Florida vacation the day before. The couple returns to Washington for the turn of the year.
Trump misses his own annual New Year’s Eve party as a result.
Guests had already gathered for the party, and insiders told CNN. The White House has not explained why Trump is returning to Washington earlier. It announced on Wednesday evening that the president would be leaving the next morning.
These are Trump’s last days as president. He lost to his Democratic opponent Joe Biden in the recent presidential election, although Trump refuses to acknowledge his loss. Biden will succeed him on January 20.
In less than a week, on January 6, the US Congress will set the election results. This is usually a formality, but a Republican senator has announced that he will object.
Trump himself tweeted about the date several times. “January 6, see you in DC (Washington)!” he wrote, referring to the protests scheduled for that day.
