The British government claims in its own analysis to be the big winner of the trade agreement with the European Union.
According to the leaked analysis, published by the blog Guido Fawkes, the United Kingdom has won on 28 points, against 11 points where the EU took the victory. It has become a compromise on 26 points, says the Johnson government.
There is a lot to be said about this point-by-point analysis of the deal. Several issues that the United Kingdom claims to have brought into the negotiations do not adequately reflect both sides’ original positions.
The analysis does show how important it is for Johnson to present the deal as a victory. He needs the support of strict Brexit advocates to get the trade deal approved in the House of Commons.
Those hardliners have waited years for the UK to break away from the EU and will scrutinize any compromise, significantly if it can limit their country’s future freedom.
