More than One Hundred Venezuelan Soldiers Deserted

The unrest in Venezuela continues. A few hundred members of the Venezuelan security forces have deserted since Saturday and fled to Colombia. That is what the Colombian migration service reports.

“So far, the Colombian immigration service has received just over a hundred members of the Venezuelan forces who have left their country, fleeing the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro,” the Sunday service said in a statement.

The number of deserters is less than the Venezuelan opposition hoped. On Saturday, the opposition tried to bring food and other relief supplies from Colombia and Brazil into the country.

This did not work in the Venezuelan border town of Santa Elena de Uairén: attempts ended on a wall of tanks, soldiers and tear gas. At least two people, including a 14-year-old boy, were killed.

The opposition counted on the support of the Venezuelan security forces, but it failed because too few soldiers defected.
