German carmaker Volkswagen has appointed a manager to ensure compliance with human rights regulations.
The new manager, Kerstin Waltenberg, is part of the compliance department and reports directly to the board of directors, the German business newspaper Handelsblatt reported.

According to a spokesperson for the car group, the appointment mainly has to do with new regulations. According to Handelsblatt, VW is also responding to criticism of the group’s activities in China, especially at the factory in Xinjiang.
Activists say there are thousands of individuals in “re-education camps” around Xinjiang. Beijing is accused of detaining and imposing forced labour on more than a million Uyghurs and other Muslims.
