Not only Schiphol Airport is cutting the number of flights this summer due to crowds in combination with staff shortages, but London’s Gatwick airport is also forced to intervene.
The British airport announced that it would reduce the number of flights during the summer months to cope with the crowds.
The UK’s second-largest airport will limit flights to 825 per day in July. A month later, this concerns a maximum of 850 flights per day. The interventions are intended to prevent chaos at the airport and avoid last-minute cancellations by airlines. Gatwick typically operates up to 900 flights on peak days in August.
Airports across Europe are struggling with staff shortages and logistical problems as passenger traffic has picked up again after the corona crisis. Airlines such as Lufthansa and Easyjet have already announced plans to cut the number of flights this summer.
Earlier this month, Britain’s Transport Secretary Grant Shapps called on airlines to stop selling tickets for flights they cannot man. That happened after a wave of cancellations.
