Google is Also Scaling Back Its Diversity Policy

Google is scrapping its diversity targets for hiring new staff, The Wall Street Journal reports based on an email to staff. The American company is following other major tech companies in the United States.

Facebook parent company Meta and online retailer Amazon previously abandoned specific diversity initiatives.

In addition to scrapping the targets, Google is reviewing several diversity, equity and inclusion programs, according to the paper. Meta told employees last month that they will no longer be required to interview candidates from underrepresented backgrounds for open positions. They will no longer be required to do business with “diverse” suppliers.

Programs dismantled
Amazon told employees the company is “phasing out outdated programs and materials.” American companies such as the fast food chain McDonald’s and Walmart retail chain have already preceded Meta and Amazon in taking similar steps.

Diversity programs are also being dismantled within the U.S. government. For example, the administration of President Donald Trump has ordered government agencies and departments to eliminate diversity initiatives that were designed to improve opportunities for women, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ people and other minority groups.
