Facebook’s parent company, Meta Platforms, is launching a facial recognition tool to detect fake ads featuring celebrity images.
After testing the tool in other countries, the new application is launching in the European Union, the UK, and South Korea.
Fake ads featuring doctored celebrity images are widespread on social media, often enticing users to share personal information or transfer money. “We believe this tool will help us identify misused images of public figures,” said David Agranovich, director of cyberthreats at Meta.
Meta has been repeatedly sued recently for misusing celebrity images and distributing fake advertisements on its platforms.
