The American popular science magazine Scientific American has spoken out for a presidential candidate for the first time in its history.
The magazine, in which Albert Einstein, among others, once published, ranks behind the Democrat Joe Biden in its October issue.
“We are not doing this lightly,” write the Scientific American editors. To The Washington Post, editor-in-chief Laura Helmuth says, “We would like to stay aloof from politics, but this president is so anti-science that we can’t ignore it.”
The piece refers to, among other things, Trump’s inadequate approach to the corona pandemic, the climate issue and his hostility to scientists, which are necessary to combat the crises.
“That’s why we insist on voting for Joe Biden, who offers evidence-based plans to protect our health, our economy and the climate.”
Science has rebelled against Trump’s policies and beliefs more often in recent years. For example, a March for Science was organized in 2017, and last May, the medical journal The Lancet Trump criticized “inconsistent and incoherent” response to the coronavirus.
