In Afghanistan, at least 26 people died in a flash flood in the central province of Maidan Wardak. The local authorities have reported this. More deaths are feared; at least forty people are still missing.

“Many victims were asleep when they were surprised by the rapidly rising water,” said a spokesman for the Afghan authorities. “Hundreds of houses and farmland have been flooded. The roads in the area were closed by the water,” the spokesman said.

The Afghan government, led by the Taliban, calls on aid organizations to provide emergency aid in the affected regions.

Hectares of agricultural land have been flooded, which can have significant consequences for the inhabitants. There is already a famine in the country. Moreover, Afghanistan is suffering greatly from the effects of climate change.

Flooding is difficult to predict in the mountainous regions. There is also no flood alarm provided. On average, 200,000 people a year are affected by natural disasters in Afghanistan.
