The report of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) should be the death blow for coal, oil and gas. That was the first reaction of UN chief António Guterres to the climate report presented on Monday.
It indicates, according to Guterres, that fossil fuels are destroying the earth, and the report gives humanity a “code red” warning.
The report states that the goal of not allowing the temperature on the earth to rise more than 1.5 degrees by 2030 is no longer achievable. That is ten years earlier than the panel itself had previously estimated. Guterres urges politicians to act quickly and drastically.
“The alarm bells are ringing deafening.”
Therefore, more money must come from rich countries to make adjustments to prevent warming in developing countries. He hopes the world’s leaders will design solutions at the upcoming climate summit in Glasgow in November.
