Taliban Capture Second Provincial Capital
The Taliban have captured a provincial capital in Afghanistan for the second time in less than 24 hours. Local officials say Muslim extremists have overrun Sheberghan in northern Jowzjan province.
Government forces are said to have withdrawn to the city’s airport.
The airport is one of the few locations that are still in the hands of security forces. They have had to withdraw to other places.
The Taliban are said to have taken over the city’s governor’s office, police headquarters and prison, among other things. Images are being circulated on social media showing how prisoners can flee with the help of the Taliban.
The Muslim extremists are on the rise as international troops leave Afghanistan after two decades. They seized the capital of the southern province of Nimruz, on the other side of the country, on Friday.
