The United States will make exceptions to some of the sanctions imposed on Russia. Precisely, concerning telecom services, some sanctions are being scaled back.
Governments in Europe and the US, in particular, are rapidly increasing their sanctions against Russia, but some previous sanctions on telecom applications have just been scaled back this week.
This concerns explicitly services for software, hardware and IT technology that American companies provide for communication. Under the current system, US companies cannot supply software, hardware and other services to Russia. However, exceptions are now being made for some telecom applications.
It concerns a fairly limited number of services, to which a whole series of rules are attached. So, for example, US companies cannot provide those services to the Russian Central Bank and some other financial institutions in the country.
The US government won’t say why the sanctions are being lifted, but it appears to be a way to ensure that Russians are not completely cut off from Western news sources and social media.
