Thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets to protest against the new economic sanctions of the US, which will take effect on Monday.
The demonstrators gathered Sunday in front of the building where the American embassy used to be. It was stormed by radical Iranian students precisely 39 years ago, on November 4, 1979.
The demonstrators chanted Sunday slogans against the US, against Israel and Saudi Arabia.
In May of this year, the US withdrew from the nuclear deal that was signed with Iran in 2015. The intention was to get the country out of its international isolation and to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon.
In August, the United States decided to impose sanctions on Iran again. On Monday, new measures will be added, including against the energy and banking sectors.
“The US has been trying for 40 years, but in all those years Iran was the winner and the US the loser,” said Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s highest leader.
