The Syrian regime is opening two additional border crossings with Turkey so that the United Nations can provide more aid to earthquake victims in severely affected northwestern Syria.
Two transitions will be added for a period of three months, said UN chief Antonio Guterres, who welcomed the decision. The international organization is currently only allowed to use one border crossing.
Aid for Syria is progressing with difficulty because several rebel groups control the disaster area.
In addition, the regime of President Bashar al-Assad considers the delivery of aid through the Syrian border without its endorsement as a violation of sovereignty. Therefore, the green light was prearranged for first aid deliveries only a few days ago.
