Canadian Opposition Leader Poilievre Looks Like Losing His Seat

Canadian Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre looks set to lose his seat in parliament after Monday’s elections. Liberal Bruce Fanjoy defeated the Conservative leader in his constituency of Carleton, broadcaster CBC predicts.

Last year, Poilievre seemed on his way to becoming Canadian prime minister. In polls, his party was far ahead of the Liberal Party of then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Poilievre embraced the slogan “Canada First”, reminiscent of Donald Trump’s “America First” campaign in the US.

That lead in the polls later evaporated completely, which could have consequences for Poilievre’s position as party leader.

It failed to adapt sufficiently to the new political situation created by Trudeau’s departure and the tensions between Canada and the Trump administration.
