Samsung Unveils Next-Generation Foldable Smartphones
Tech giant Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 during an Unpacked event. It is the fourth generation of foldable mobile phones from the South Korean company.
The Galaxy Z Flip4 is the device that you ‘fold’ vertically. The new model comes with a thinner hinge and straighter edges. One of the eye-catchers is the FlexCam technology, which according to Samsung, is optimized for the Meta platforms Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. For example, you can take selfies or video recordings in (closed) Cover mode and then switch to the (partly opened) Flex mode to continue recording hands-free.
You also don’t have to open the Z Flip4 to call, text, and unlock the device: you can do this directly from the Cover screen. The new 5G smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 platform and houses a larger battery of 3,700 mAh.
The Galaxy Z Fold also got a makeover. The display still has a solid 7.6-inch diagonal but now offers more brightness, according to Samsung, in addition to a refresh rate of 120Hz and a less visible Under Display Camera (UDC).
The power source is again the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 platform, and of course, the Z Fold4 also supports the fast 5G network. A first on a smartphone is Android 12L, a special version of Google’s operating system for devices with large screens, such as foldable devices.
To facilitate multitasking, the Galaxy Z Fold4 got a new taskbar with a layout similar to that of a PC. Thanks to that custom layout and several extra swipes, you get easier access to your favourite and recent apps, according to Samsung.
A number of Google applications, such as Chrome and Gmail, now also support drag and drop to copy and paste content from one app to another easily. Also worth noting is that the Office suite and Outlook can take advantage of the full folding screen, thanks to a partnership with Microsoft.
