Police May Not Use Amazon’s Facial Recognition Technology for Years
US law enforcement agencies have been banned from using Amazon’s controversial facial recognition software for a year.
The American technology giant announced this on Wednesday.
According to Amazon, this gives the United States Congress enough time to “implement appropriate rules” to use facial recognition technology ethically.
The company states this in a statement. It is feared that law enforcement will profile the ethnic groups more.
IBM, another technology giant, announced on Tuesday that it would no longer offer its software. The company further called for a “national dialogue” on the use of the technology.
Amazon also announced that organizations that protect children against sexual abuse and human trafficking may still use Rekognition.
