The US Wants to Quickly Reopen Consulate in Wuhan

Employees of the American consulate in the Chinese city of Wuhan can get back to work soon. US Ambassador Terry Branstad plans to resume operations there “soon.”

The United States Department of State evacuated employees of the diplomatic mission and their families in late January.

The Chinese authorities then shut the city off from the outside world because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The coronavirus began to take hold late last year in Wuhan, which is home to some 11 million people.

The metropolis remains the worst hit in China. At least 7 million people worldwide have now become infected, and more than 410,000 patients have died.

It is still unclear when exactly the diplomatic post will reopen. The embassy did not discuss this in detail.
