Netflix is Testing Ways to Prevent Password Sharing

Sharing your Netflix password with multiple families may soon be out of the question. The streaming service seems to monitor its rules more strictly.

A Netflix subscription allows you to stream on 1, 2 or 4 devices at the same time. In principle, those devices must belong to the same household, but Netflix did not supervise this too strictly so that quite a few people could ‘share’ a subscription.

Until now, reports from users must show that some people did not get logged in. They are informed that they must belong to the same household to use the Netflix subscription. Of course, with a button to take out your own subscription. The message appears to pop up mainly on televisions (in the US) and seems to be based on location data.

When the owner of the account logs in from a different location, for example, he or she can request a verification code when moving or on vacation. But it looks like sharing with other families or ex-roommates is no longer acceptable.

“This test is designed to ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so,” the company said in a statement. It is not clear whether the test will be extended to other devices.
