More than half of the approximately 9 million Israelis have now received both doses of a corona vaccine.
So says Health Minister Yuli Edelstein, who praised his vaccinated fellow countrymen on Twitter. “Thanks to them, the state of Israel is defeating the coronavirus,” the minister said, according to the Jerusalem Post newspaper.
Israel began vaccinating residents in December with Pfizer / BioNTech’s corona vaccine, which is also used in Europe. The country subsequently grew to become one of the international frontrunners in the field of vaccination.
All residents older than 16 can now sign up for an injection. The rapid vaccination allowed large parts of the economy to be reopened in the run-up to this week’s elections.
Authorities have also vaccinated tens of thousands of Palestinians working in Israel. A vaccination campaign has also started in Palestinian areas. It uses vaccines made available by the international COVAX program and the United Arab Emirates.
