Monero Official Site Distributes Malware That Can Steal Crypto Coins
Monero Official Site Distributes Malware That Can Steal Crypto Coins. The official site for the Monero was hacked and is now spreading malware that can steal funds. The people behind GetMonero.com have reported this themselves.
Users who have downloaded their wallet software this week from GetMonero.com, the official site for the Monero cryptocurrency, may also have received malware. That’s what the people behind the site say.
The supply chain attack came to light on Monday. The malware in question sends the encryption codes needed to open a wallet, and the coins in the wallet, to a third-party server.
In forums such as Reddit, users meanwhile claim that they have lost money as a result of the hack. One says that a single transaction, 9 hours after the software installation, pulled out $ 7,000 in crypto coins from his wallet.
GetMonero advises people who have downloaded their wallet software on Monday to remove the binaries in question and re-download the software.
However, it is not entirely clear how the malware ended up on the site and whether the problem can repeat itself. Some caution is therefore recommended.
