Microsoft: Windows 10X is Not Coming
After many postponements, Microsoft confirms that the modernized operating system Windows 10X will not be available. However, elements will show up in regular Windows 10.
Windows 10 was listed in the fall of 2019 as a modified operating system, including for devices with multiple screens. The system would mainly be intended for modern devices, including an app launcher and a slightly more modern layout.
Later it became known that Microsoft might also use Windows 10X for laptops. But along the way, the operating system was delayed, and earlier this month, rumours leaked that it would also no longer appear in 2021 and probably “not appear in its original form.” Now Microsoft itself is communicating, and the company says Windows 10X will never come.
“After a year of exploring and engaging with customers, we realize that Windows 10X technology can be more helpful and serve more customers than we originally envisioned. We have concluded that the 10x technology should not be limited to some of our customers. ‘ Microsoft said in a blog post about the most recent major Windows 10 update.
Rather than launching a product called Windows 10X in 2021, as we originally planned, we are taking the lessons from our journey and accelerating the integration of fundamental 10X technology into other parts of Windows and products in the company.’
With the latter, Microsoft wants to say that things developed for 10X now also appear in preview versions of Windows 10 and will probably be rolled out to all users later. These include new app container technology such as Microsoft Defender Application Guard, better voice typing and a better touch keyboard.
Microsoft has been trying for more than ten years to make Windows more diverse with specific devices. Think of Windows RT for devices on an ARM chip or Windows 10S for less powerful devices. But the company has now also learned that such a split-off is confusing for consumers. This may have played a role in simply including functions of Windows 10X in the core product Windows.
