Japanese car company Honda Motor will temporarily shut down production at many of its factories in the United States and Canada.
The company struggles with a lack of chips for cars and disruptions in the supply of parts due to winter weather.
These are factories in the US states of Ohio, Indiana and Alabama, and Ontario’s Canadian province.
Production could be shut down for a week, a Honda spokesman said. The company produced 1.45 million vehicles in North America last year, a 20 percent decrease from 2019. Honda has 12 plants in the US and one in Canada.
Other major car manufacturers have also had to stop production earlier due to the chip shortage. These include General Motors (GM), Ford Motor and Volkswagen. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, chip companies are having difficulty supplying enough chips to the automotive industry.
This is due to the strong demand for chips for smartphones, laptops and game consoles, for example. There are also delivery problems due to corona.
