Hands-On With the New OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro
Few manufacturers have such a clear smartphone range as OnePlus. The Chinese company builds only two devices, both from the premium segment, and they are upgraded every six months.
Today the latest flagships were unveiled: the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.
The Pro version is, of course, the most luxuriously equipped model of the bunch, with some unique features, such as a screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz and the possibility to charge the smartphone wirelessly.
Still, even the entry-level model offers support for that one buzzword of today, 5G. The devices use the same X55 modem from Qualcomm, which – also in both smartphones – is flanked by a Snapdragon 865, one of the most powerful processors on the market.
That is quite striking for the OnePlus 8. After all, many competitors equip their cheaper models with the Snapdragon 765: it is a bit less efficient and has a built-in 5G modem, which makes the chip both more compact and less expensive. It shows that OnePlus does not want to skimp on power.
Also remarkable: in the benchmarks or test programs that we released on the phones (3DMark and Geekbench), the OnePlus 8 always scored a fraction better than its big brother.
However, the difference is negligible in practice; the two phones are in any case among the fastest devices currently available.
