Google AI CEO Calls Chinese DeepSeek Claims Exaggerated

Demis Hassabis, head of Google’s artificial intelligence division, isn’t worried about Chinese rival DeepSeek. Google has superior AI technology, he told staff.

The rapid rise of Chinese chatbot DeepSeek has recently caused a stir worldwide, with financial markets panicking at the unexpected impact on technology and investment. The Chinese technology is said to be at least as good as that of larger competitors, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. It also requires less money to train and develop the chatbot.

Depending on Western models
But Hassabis says some of DeepSeek’s claims are “exaggerated,” US business channel CNBC reports. According to the AI researcher, the reported cost of the Chinese AI model is likely “only a small fraction” of the total cost of developing their systems.

He also said that DeepSeek likely used much more hardware than stated and that the Chinese relied on Western AI models.
