The creator of one of the largest Bitcoin robberies has been sentenced to five years in prison in the United States.
Ilya Lichtenstein stole almost 120,000 bitcoins in 2016. He and his wife then tried to hide the proceeds by laundering money and opening bank accounts under false identities.
Lichtenstein is said to have used various hacking techniques to gain access to the trading platform Bitfinex. During the hack, 119,754 bitcoins were stolen and transferred to his crypto wallet.
At the time, the crypto coins were approximately 71 million dollars, equivalent to approximately 67 million euros. With the current Bitcoin price, which has been rising since last week, its value would run into many billions of dollars.
