In the city of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, Russian shelling and airstrikes have killed at least 34 civilians in the past 24 hours, emergency services in the country’s second city have reported.

A day earlier, dozens of deaths had also been reported. The city of 1.4 million inhabitants has been on the scene of heavy shelling for days and is more or less surrounded by Russian troops. On Wednesday, Russian paratroopers landed.

Fighting continues in other cities as well, including in the southeastern port of Mariupol. According to the governor of the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Donetsk region, that city is without water and electricity.

According to the US Department of Defence, the Russian military convoy more than 60 kilometres north of the capital Kyiv has not made any progress for some time.
