Groups of sometimes heavily armed pro-Trump protesters demonstrated Thursday evening and the following night (local time) in US states where votes for the presidential election are still counting.
Supporters of Trump’s challenger Joe Biden were also on their feet. In areas such as Arizona and Pennsylvania, where the president and Biden are still in a battle for the most votes, the demonstrations were generally quiet.
Here and there there was repeated verbal abuse and outside the Maricopa Election Center in Phoenix, Arizona, the supporters of both candidates briefly fought.
Heavily armed right-wing groups gathered at the centre, while votes were counted indoors, but despite the tension, the protests went off peacefully.
In Philadelphia, police arrested a man suspected of attacking the building where the votes are being counted. The cities of New York and Washington and swing states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Georgia were also troubled.
In Las Vegas, Nevada, local media reported that a group of protesters gathered in front of an election centre who had come to protest against Democrats ‘stealing’ the election.
Many protesters carried Trump flags, and a Proud Boys flag was also seen. The Proud Boys is an extreme right-wing white group.
