In Germany, two people were killed and many injured last night in traffic accidents caused by slippery roads and winter weather. The hundreds of accidents took place all over the country.
A 19-year-old motorist was killed in a collision with another car in the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. The other driver was seriously injured.
In Lower Saxony, which borders on the Netherlands, a 15-year-old girl died after her father lost control of his car on the slippery road. The four other occupants, in addition to the father and three children aged 4, 8 and 15, were taken to hospital with injuries.
In the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, there were at least 190 accidents due to snow and slippery roads. Dozens of accidents on slippery roads have also been reported in Bavaria. Several people were slightly injured there.
Several roads in Germany, including the major A6 motorway in Bavaria, were closed due to slippery conditions. Twenty cars were involved in nine accidents within one kilometre on that road in a short period of time.
