Daughter of Ilham Tohti Imprisoned in China Receives European Sakharov Prize
In the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the Sakharov Prize was awarded to Jewher Ilhami, the daughter of Uyghurian professor Ilham Tohti, who is locked up in China.
He receives the prize for his commitment to the rights of the Islamic Uighur minority in the Xinjiang region.
Ilham Tohti could not collect the prize himself, so his daughter Jewher did it for him. That happened during a ceremony at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The woman has not seen her father since his imprisonment in 2014 and says she has not heard from him for two years.
“My father – like most Uyghurs – was labelled” violent extremist “… it is under this false pretext that the government is locking up a million people and perhaps more in concentration camps where Uyghurs are forced to change their religion (Islam ), to specify their language and culture “.
Moreover, according to her, many people are tortured and die in those camps. (Read further below the photo).
