British chip developer Arm, one of the most important companies worldwide for the smartphone industry, was to be acquired by chipmaker Nvidia. That reports sources on file.

A transaction could be publicized in the next few days. The deal would value Arm at $ 40 billion, making the acquisition the largest ever in the chip industry.

The Arm is still in the hands of the Japanese technology group Softbank today. That paid $ 32 billion for the company four years ago.

The Arm does not make chips himself but develops the architecture. Based on Arm’s design, Apple and Samsung, among others, are developing the processors for their smartphones.

None of the companies wanted to comment on the information.
