Nancy Pelosi has incurred the wrath of Azerbaijan. On Sunday, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives condemned what she believed to be an “illegal” attack by Azerbaijan on Armenia last week.

Azerbaijan called that statement “unacceptable” on Sunday.

“We condemn these attacks that hinder the prospects of a much-needed peace deal,” Pelosi said during a visit to Armenia. Both countries accused each other this week of being responsible for the outbreak of the new fighting. However, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called Pelosi’s “accusations” “baseless and unfair”.

Pelosi is the most senior American politician to visit Armenia since the country gained independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Her statements go further than the position of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who called for calm but did not assign blame.

More than 200 people were killed in the new fighting. The fighting that broke out on Tuesday is the worst between the ex-Soviet republics since 2020. Between Armenia and Azerbaijan, war broke out twice in the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in the 1990s and 2020.

Azerbaijan gained control after that latest clash. much of Nagorno-Karabakh back. Since the 1990s, the area has been under the control of ethnic Armenian residents, with support from Armenia.
