Apple Has Started Developing Its Own Modem Chips

iPhone maker Apple is working on its own modem chips for mobile devices. Bloomberg news agency writes this based on insiders.

The move, which was already expected, makes Apple less dependent on chipmaker Qualcomm, from which it still purchases the modems.

Johny Srouji, who leads Apple’s development of its own chips, has communicated the development to the company’s staff, the news agency reported. Rumours that the company wanted to make its own modem chips have been circulating since last year.

Then Intel stopped developing 5G chips, and Apple was forced to settle a conflict with Qualcomm. Shortly afterwards, Apple bought the 5G arm of Intel.

Apple has been manufacturing its own processors for iPhones and iPads for years. Since this year, it has also made laptops with self-designed processors, and by the end of 2022, all computers that Apple makes must use its own chips.
