China Announces Sanctions Against the US Politicians

China is going to impose sanctions on American politicians. The visa policy for American diplomats is also being tightened, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.

China thus responds to US sanctions against fourteen top Chinese politicians. They were given those punitive measures because, according to the US, they played a destructive role in decision-making about Hong Kong.

A spokesman for the Chinese ministry has not yet named the American politicians facing sanctions. He did make it clear what measures American diplomats have to deal with in his country.

Holders of US diplomatic passports will soon no longer be able to travel visa-free to Hong Kong and Macau. These areas have a special status within the communist people’s republic.

The US and China have long been at odds about how Beijing deals with the special status of that metropolis. The former British Crown Colony has been part of China again since 1997.

That promised that Hong Kong would maintain a high degree of autonomy until 2047, but according to critics, Beijing is not keeping that agreement.
