The United States has given Poland a $2 billion loan to modernize its military. Washington sees an essential partner in Poland, which is currently trying to improve its defence capabilities.
This is a direct loan for foreign military financing (FMF). According to the US State Department, such loans are “reserved for some of our most important security cooperation partners.”
“Poland is a staunch ally of the US, and its security is crucial for the joint defence of NATO’s eastern flank,” the ministry said.
In light of the Russian invasion of Poland’s neighbouring country, Ukraine, Warsaw wants to invest heavily in defence. The EU and NATO member state aims to spend 4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) on defence this year, twice as much as NATO asks of its member states.
