Football just a game? Not in Iran. More than 700 prisoners were reportedly released after the Iranian team defeated Wales at the World Cup in Qatar.
After losing to England 6-2, Iran beat Wales 2-0 on Friday. “Following a special order issued by the head of the judicial authority following the national football team’s victory (…) against Wales, 709 detainees were released from various prisons in the country,” the agency said.
” some people were arrested during the recent events,” it added. By “events,” the agency refers to the demonstrations following the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman who died after being arrested by vice police for purportedly violating the Islamic Republic’s severe dress code.
Since the riots began, the regime in Iran has already arrested thousands of people.
