Russia: Too Early for Discussion on Donetsk and Luhansk Borders

Russia says it is too early to discuss the exact borders of the separatist-proclaimed people’s republics of Donetsk and Luhansk.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that the so-called friendship treaties with the regions must first be ratified by parliament, the Russian news agency RIA reported.

Russia recognized the people’s republics on Monday evening, but it was not made clear at the time which areas exactly fall under this. The pro-Russian separatists rule a part of Donetsk and Luhansk. However, they don’t control those entire regions. The Russian parliament is expected to ratify the treaties on Tuesday.

Putin already signed the treaties on Monday. It states, among other things, that Russia can send troops to Donetsk and Luhansk and build military bases there.

It also calls for the use of the Russian currency and the extension of Russian citizenship among residents. The treaties have a duration of ten years but can be extended.
